Part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, it is Uganda’s oldest rainforest, stretching back 25,000 years having survived through the last ice age. The park's rich array of diversity which includes many Albertine Rift endemics comprises of nearly 400 species of plants,120 mammal species and over 350 bird avifauna could be attributed to the broad altitude span (1160m to 2607m) and its very ancient provenance. Famed for its Gorilla tracking, the park is home to nearly 350 endangered mountain gorillas, which is estimated to be half of the world's mountain gorilla population. There are 12 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable Park that can be tracked by travellers in the four sectors of Buhoma, Nkuringo, Ruhiija and Rushaga. Besides the endangered gorilla', the park also is a sanctuary for some highly threatened mammal species like chimpanzee, l’Hoest’s monkey and African elephant; birds such as African green broadbill, Grauer’s swamp warbler, Turner’s Eremomela, Chapin’s flycatcher and Shelley’s Crimson-wing; and butterflies such as African giant swallowtail and Cream-banded swallowtail. Bwindi is also home to at least 200 butterfly species, including eight Albertine Rift Endemics and is most treasured forest for montane forest butterflies. The park enables multiple guided nature walks which let you get a first-hand experience of the incredible diversity of the park.
